Superhero film
A film centered on a superhero’s exploits, identity, or conflicts, usually adapting comic-book characters or using original costumed heroes.
Superhero: A heroic figure who uses extraordinary abilities, resources, or skills to confront threats and protect others. The genre takes its central character and conflicts from this broader heroic figure.
Batman (1989 film): A 1989 film directed by Tim Burton, starring Michael Keaton as Batman. Its gothic style and commercial success showed how a superhero film could reshape a famous character’s screen image.
Superhero comics: Comics featuring heroes with extraordinary abilities, distinctive identities, and conflicts against threats or injustice. Comic books supplied many of the characters, visual motifs, and serialized plots adapted for film.
Science fiction film: A film that explores imagined technologies, scientific ideas, or speculative societies. Both use extraordinary abilities and spectacle, but science fiction need not center on a costumed hero.

Secret identity: A concealed personal identity maintained alongside a public role or assumed persona. Many superhero plots turn on the strain between a hero’s private life and public persona.
X-Men (2000 film): A 2000 film directed by Bryan Singer, featuring a team of mutant superheroes from Marvel Comics. Its ensemble and themes of prejudice helped make contemporary comic-book adaptations a sustained film trend.
Superman (1940s animated series): A series of theatrical animated shorts produced by Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios from 1941 to 1943. Its expressive animation translated comic-book powers into memorable screen spectacle decades before modern effects.
Fantasy film: A film built around magic, mythic beings, or worlds governed by supernatural rules. Superhero films can use fantasy elements, yet usually foreground a recognizable heroic identity and public mission.
DC Extended Universe: A shared fictional universe of DC Comics adaptations released by Warner Bros. from 2013 to 2023. Its films illustrate a competing studio strategy for connecting superhero stories across installments.
