Superparamagnetism

Superparamagnetism is the thermally driven reversal of an entire single-domain nanoparticle’s magnetic moment. Above a characteristic blocking temperature, rapid reversals eliminate stable remanent magnetization.

Néel relaxation: Thermally activated reversal of a particle’s magnetic moment over its magnetic anisotropy energy barrier. It describes how whole-particle moments fluctuate without physical rotation.
Magnetic domain: A region in a magnetic material whose atomic magnetic moments are aligned in a common direction. The nanoparticles of interest are small enough to behave as single domains.
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: Iron oxide nanoparticles engineered to show superparamagnetic behavior at physiological temperatures. They are widely studied for biomedical imaging, heating, and targeted manipulation.
Ferromagnetism: Long-range alignment of atomic magnetic moments that produces spontaneous magnetization. Unlike stable ferromagnets, superparamagnetic particles have no persistent moment direction above blocking.
Dipole–dipole interaction: The magnetic interaction between two dipoles, dependent on their separation and relative orientation. Interactions between particles can shift blocking behavior away from isolated-particle predictions.
Blocking temperature: The temperature at which a magnetic particle’s relaxation time becomes comparable to an observation timescale. Above it, moment reversals erase measurable remanence during observation.
Single-domain particle: A magnetic particle small enough to maintain a uniform magnetization rather than multiple domains. Its magnetization can reverse as one coherent magnetic moment.
Magnetic resonance imaging: An imaging technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance signals to map internal structures. Superparamagnetic iron oxides can alter nearby proton relaxation and provide contrast.
Paramagnetism: Magnetism in which independent atomic or molecular moments align weakly with an applied field. Superparamagnetic particles respond similarly but carry much larger, collective moments.
Particle-size distribution: The range and frequency of particle sizes in a material or sample. Because reversal barriers depend on particle volume, size variation broadens blocking behavior.
