Surface-area-to-volume ratio

Surface-area-to-volume ratio is an object's surface area divided by its volume. It describes how much boundary is available relative to the space enclosed.

Geometric scaling: The way geometric properties change as an object's size changes. For similar shapes, surface area scales with length squared while volume scales with length cubed.
Cell size: The physical dimensions of a cell, shaped by its functions and constraints on transport and organization. Cells remain small partly because exchange across their membranes must serve their internal volume.
Surface area: The total area covering the boundary of a three-dimensional object. It supplies the numerator and depends on both size and shape.
Surface-area-to-mass ratio: An object's surface area divided by its mass. It resembles the volume-based ratio but depends on density as well as geometry.
Isoperimetric inequality: A mathematical inequality stating that a sphere encloses the greatest volume for a given surface area. It shows that shape changes the ratio even when volume stays fixed.
Alveolus: A tiny air sac in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide move between air and blood. Its numerous folded sacs provide a large exchange surface relative to lung volume.
Volume: The amount of three-dimensional space enclosed by an object. It supplies the denominator and grows faster than area under uniform enlargement.
Allometric scaling: The study of how biological traits change with body size, often according to power laws. It extends geometric scaling to traits that do not follow simple proportional changes.
Diffusion: The net movement of particles from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration. Exchange across a boundary can become limiting when volume grows faster than available surface.
Intestinal villus: A fingerlike projection lining the small intestine that increases absorptive surface area. Villi and microvilli expand the area available for nutrient uptake.
