Surface area

Surface area is the total area of a three-dimensional object's boundary, including its flat faces and curved surfaces. It is measured in square units.

Area: Area measures the size of a two-dimensional region in square units. Surface area adds the areas of the two-dimensional pieces that cover an object's boundary.
Net (geometry): A two-dimensional arrangement of polygons that folds into a three-dimensional polyhedron. Adding a solid's net-face areas gives its surface area.
Surface-area-to-volume ratio: The ratio of an object's boundary area to the volume it encloses. It compares exchange area with the amount of material or fluid inside.
Volume: The amount of three-dimensional space enclosed by an object or occupied by a substance. Volume measures interior space, whereas surface area measures the boundary.
Three-dimensional space: Space with three independent spatial dimensions: length, width, and height. Surface area describes the boundary of objects that occupy three-dimensional space.
Prism: A polyhedron with two congruent, parallel polygonal bases joined by parallelogram faces. Its area is the areas of both bases plus the lateral faces.
Heat transfer: The movement of thermal energy between regions at different temperatures. Exposed area often controls how quickly an object exchanges heat with its surroundings.
Lateral surface area: The area of a solid's side faces or curved side, excluding its bases. It excludes the bases that are included in total surface area.
Polygon: A plane figure bounded by a finite sequence of straight line segments. Polyhedral surface area is found by adding the areas of polygonal faces.
Cylinder: A solid with two congruent circular bases joined by a curved surface. Its total area combines two circular ends with the unrolled curved side.
