Surrealism

Surrealism is an avant-garde movement that used dreamlike imagery, unexpected juxtapositions, and unconscious thought to challenge rationality and conventional artistic forms.

Automatism: A creative practice that lets actions or thoughts proceed with minimal conscious control. Surrealists used it to bypass deliberate reasoning while making images and texts.
Dada: An international avant-garde movement that rejected conventional artistic and cultural values, especially during and after World War I. Surrealism inherited Dada's anti-rational revolt while pursuing a more sustained account of the unconscious.
Salvador Dalí: A Spanish artist known for meticulously painted, dreamlike images and his association with Surrealism. His illusionistic scenes became among the movement's most widely recognized images.
The Persistence of Memory: Salvador Dalí's 1931 painting of limp watches in a barren, dreamlike landscape. Its distorted clocks condense Surrealism's transformation of familiar objects and time.
Abstract expressionism: A postwar American art movement marked by abstraction, gestural painting, and large-scale canvases. Its emphasis on spontaneous gesture developed in a different context from Surrealist automatism.
Psychic automatism: A Surrealist method of recording thought without the censorship of reason or aesthetic judgment. André Breton defined Surrealism through this attempt to express thought directly.
André Breton: A French poet and writer who led Surrealism and published its first manifesto in 1924. His theories and organizational leadership helped define the movement's beginnings.
Max Ernst: A German-born artist who helped develop Surrealist painting and experimental techniques such as frottage. His technical experiments translated chance and texture into elaborate imagery.
The Treachery of Images: René Magritte's painting of a pipe accompanied by the sentence “Ceci n'est pas une pipe.” It applies Surrealist estrangement to the relation between an image, a word, and an object.
Pop art: An art movement that drew imagery and techniques from mass media and consumer culture. Its reuse of familiar images offers a later, distinct route to disrupting ordinary perception.
