Surround sound

Surround sound is audio reproduction using multiple channels and speakers to create a sense of sound surrounding the listener. It can place sounds around or above a listening position.

5.1 surround sound: A surround sound format with five full-range channels and one low-frequency effects channel. It is a widely used speaker layout for films and home theaters.
Audio channel: An audio channel is a discrete signal path carrying sound to a speaker or playback destination. Surround systems distribute separate channel signals among speakers.
Home theater: A home audio-visual system designed to reproduce a cinema-like viewing and listening experience. It is a common setting for multichannel speakers and surround sound playback.
Mono sound: Audio reproduction in which all sound is combined into a single channel. Mono offers no channel-based spatial placement around the listening position.
7.1 surround sound: A surround sound layout with seven full-range channels and one low-frequency effects channel. Two additional side or rear channels can make movement around the listener more continuous.
Loudspeaker: A transducer that converts an electrical audio signal into sound waves. Each channel needs a playback speaker, except where bass management redirects its signal.
Dolby Digital: A family of perceptual audio coding technologies used to encode multichannel sound. It helped distribute compressed surround sound on films and home media.
Headphone virtual surround: Signal processing that simulates a surround sound field through headphones. It seeks surround-like localization without a room full of speakers.
LFE channel: The low-frequency effects channel carries bass effects in multichannel audio formats. Its dedicated signal feeds the subwoofer in common layouts such as 5.1.
Subwoofer: A loudspeaker designed to reproduce low-frequency sound, typically bass. It commonly reproduces the low-frequency effects channel and redirected bass.
