Suruga Bay

Suruga Bay is a deep inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the central Honshu coast of Japan, within Shizuoka Prefecture. It is Japan’s deepest bay, with depths exceeding 2,500 meters.

Izu Peninsula: A mountainous peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture that projects south into the Pacific Ocean. Its western coast forms the eastern side of Suruga Bay.
Shimizu Port: A major port in Shizuoka City on the northern shore of Suruga Bay. It is the bay’s principal harbor and a gateway for regional trade.
Mount Fuji: Japan’s highest mountain, a volcanic peak on the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. Its familiar profile rises above the bay’s northern coast.
Sagami Bay: A Pacific inlet on Japan’s central Honshu coast, east of the Izu Peninsula. It is the neighboring major bay on the peninsula’s opposite side.
Japan Trench: A deep ocean trench off northeastern Japan where the Pacific Plate descends beneath the Okhotsk Plate. It provides a contrast to the nearby Nankai Trough in Japan’s subduction-zone geography.
Suruga Bay Cherry Salmon: A deep-sea salmonid found in Suruga Bay, also called sakura ebi. The bay supports Japan’s distinctive fishery for this small shrimp-like crustacean.
Miho no Matsubara: A scenic pine grove and beach on the Miho Peninsula in Shizuoka City. The shoreline is famed for views across Suruga Bay toward Mount Fuji.
Enshū Sea: A coastal sea off western Shizuoka Prefecture, opening into the Pacific Ocean. It lies west of Suruga Bay along the same prefectural coastline.
Nankai Trough: A submarine trough south of Japan where the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate. The trough’s tectonic system extends toward Suruga Bay and shapes its deep basin.
Sakura shrimp: A small, translucent deep-water shrimp harvested commercially in Suruga Bay and nearby waters. Its seasonal fishery is closely associated with Suruga Bay’s coastal communities.
