Surveillance

Surveillance is the systematic observation or monitoring of people, places, or activities. It can be conducted by governments, organizations, or individuals using human observation or technical systems.

Closed-circuit television: A video surveillance system that transmits signals to a limited set of monitors or recording devices. Cameras make persistent observation of public and private spaces possible.
Privacy: The condition of having control over access to oneself, one's information, or one's activities. Surveillance can reduce people's control over what is observed and recorded.
Jeremy Bentham: An English philosopher and jurist who designed the Panopticon as a model prison enabling centralized observation. His prison design became a lasting reference point for surveillance and discipline.
Targeted surveillance: Monitoring directed at specified people, places, or activities rather than a broad population. It contrasts with surveillance that collects information indiscriminately.
Facial recognition system: A technology that identifies or verifies a person by analyzing facial features in an image. It can connect camera footage to an individual's identity.
Chilling effect: The deterrence of lawful expression or activity through fear of scrutiny or punishment. People may avoid speech or association when they expect monitoring.
Panopticon: A prison design by Jeremy Bentham in which one observer could potentially watch inmates from a central tower. It gives architectural form to observation whose certainty is impossible to verify.
Public surveillance: The monitoring of people and activity in spaces accessible to the public. It focuses on observation in shared spaces rather than private communications.
Signals intelligence: Intelligence gathered by intercepting and analyzing electronic signals and communications. It monitors communications rather than relying on direct visual observation.
Panopticism: A theory of social control in which possible observation encourages people to regulate their own behavior. Surveillance can shape conduct even when no observer is visibly present.
