Surveyor's wheel

A wheeled instrument that measures distance traveled by counting wheel rotations as it is pushed along the ground. Its circumference converts each rotation into a fixed increment of distance.

Wheel circumference: The distance around a wheel, equal to its diameter multiplied by π. Each complete rotation advances the instrument by approximately one wheel circumference.
Land surveying: The measurement and mapping of land boundaries, elevations, and spatial features. A surveyor's wheel is a portable tool for measuring shorter ground distances.

Pacing (surveying): A surveying method that estimates distance by counting a person's steps. Pacing estimates ground distance without a wheeled measuring instrument.
