Suspension

A heterogeneous mixture in which solid particles are dispersed through a fluid. The particles are large enough to settle over time or be separated by filtration.

Sedimentation: The settling of suspended particles or other material under gravity or an applied force. Gravity gradually separates many suspensions into clearer fluid and settled solids.
Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture whose composition is not uniform throughout. A suspension is heterogeneous because its dispersed particles remain distinct from the fluid.
Pharmaceutical suspension: A liquid medicine in which undissolved drug particles are dispersed throughout a liquid vehicle. It delivers drugs that dissolve poorly while requiring shaking to redistribute settled particles.
Emulsion: A mixture of droplets of one liquid dispersed in another immiscible liquid. An emulsion disperses liquid droplets, whereas a suspension disperses solid particles.
Mud: A wet mixture of soil, clay, or other fine sediment and water. Mud is a familiar suspension whose particles can settle when left undisturbed.
Stokes' law: A relation describing the drag force on a small sphere moving slowly through a viscous fluid. It predicts how particle size, density, and fluid viscosity affect settling speed.
Solution: A homogeneous mixture in which one or more substances are distributed at molecular or ionic scale. Unlike a suspension, a solution does not settle or separate by ordinary filtration.
Paint: A liquid or paste coating containing pigments and binders that forms a colored film when applied. Many paints suspend pigment particles and use additives to limit settling.
Foam: A dispersion of gas bubbles throughout a liquid or solid. Foams contain gas as the dispersed phase rather than suspended solids.
Blood: A fluid tissue containing blood cells and platelets suspended in plasma. Centrifugation separates blood into layers according to the settling of its components.
