Sutlej

The Sutlej is a major transboundary river rising in Tibet and flowing through India and Pakistan before joining the Chenab River. It is the easternmost of the five rivers of Punjab.

Indus River system: The network of rivers and tributaries that drains the western Himalaya and adjoining regions into the Arabian Sea. The Sutlej is one of the system’s major eastern tributaries.
Lake Rakshastal: A saline lake in Tibet near Mount Kailash, connected to the Sutlej’s headwater region. The Sutlej rises near this lake in the Tibetan Plateau.
Indus Waters Treaty: A 1960 treaty between India and Pakistan allocating the use of waters in the Indus river system. It assigns the Sutlej and the other eastern rivers primarily to India.
Bhakra Nangal Dam: A major multipurpose dam-and-canal project built on the Sutlej in northern India. It stores Sutlej water for irrigation and generates hydroelectricity.
Sutlej River pollution: The contamination of Sutlej water by sewage, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff. Pollution accumulates along the river’s populated and intensively farmed reaches.
Sutlej–Yamuna Link: A proposed canal project intended to transfer water from the Sutlej basin toward the Yamuna basin. The project would redirect Sutlej-basin water across India’s watershed divide.
Mount Kailash: A sacred mountain in Tibet near the headwaters of several major Asian rivers. The Sutlej’s source lies in the region surrounding this mountain.
Jawaharlal Nehru: India’s first prime minister, who held office from 1947 to 1964. Nehru championed major multipurpose river projects, including Bhakra-Nangal.
Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Plant: A large run-of-river hydroelectric station on the Sutlej in Himachal Pradesh, India. It uses the river’s steep upper course to generate electricity.
Harike Wetland: A Ramsar-listed wetland in Punjab, India, formed near the Beas–Sutlej confluence. Its habitats depend on the water and sediment reaching the confluence.
