Knowra Suwałki Gap Suwałki Gap The Suwałki Gap is a narrow land corridor in northeastern Poland and southern Lithuania between Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave. It connects the Baltic states by land to the rest of NATO and the European Union.
NATO : A collective-defense alliance founded in 1949 by countries in Europe and North America. The corridor’s strategic importance comes from its role in connecting NATO’s Baltic members with the alliance’s other territory.
Kaliningrad : The capital city of Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, located on the Baltic Sea. The exclave’s military and political position reflects the postwar settlement that shaped the corridor.
Baltic states : Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, three countries on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Their overland connection to allied territory runs through the Suwałki region.
Baltic Sea : An inland sea in Northern Europe bordered by the Scandinavian Peninsula, Central Europe, and the Baltic states. Sea routes offer an alternative connection, but depend on access through contested maritime space.
Belarus : A landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordering Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, and Ukraine. Belarus lies east of the corridor and borders both Poland and Lithuania.
Soviet Union : A federal socialist state that existed from 1922 until its dissolution in 1991. Soviet control of the Baltic region and Kaliningrad shaped the borders around the corridor.
Rail Baltica : A planned standard-gauge railway connecting the Baltic states with Poland and the European rail network. The railway is a major civilian transport project linking the region through Poland.
Sunda Strait : A strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra connecting the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean. Like other strategic chokepoints, it shows how geography can concentrate movement, though it is a maritime passage.
NATO Article 5 : The NATO treaty provision stating that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all. A crisis involving the corridor could test the alliance’s collective-defense commitment.
Dissolution of the Soviet Union : The breakup of the Soviet Union into fifteen independent states in 1991. Independence for Lithuania and Belarus turned the corridor into a route between separate sovereign states.
