Suwon
Suwon is a city south of Seoul and the capital of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Its historic Hwaseong Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Hwaseong Fortress: An eighteenth-century fortress encircling Suwon’s historic center, built under King Jeongjo and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortress is Suwon’s defining historic landmark and a major reason the city is known beyond the region.
Joseon dynasty: A Korean dynasty that ruled from 1392 to 1897 and shaped the peninsula’s political and cultural institutions. Hwaseong was built during this dynasty, whose court shaped Suwon’s early modern history.
Samsung Electronics: A South Korean multinational company that makes consumer electronics, semiconductors, and telecommunications equipment. The company’s headquarters and major facilities have made Suwon a center of electronics research and industry.
Yongin: A city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, southeast of Seoul and adjacent to Suwon. Yongin shares Suwon’s metropolitan setting and is a major neighboring city.
King Jeongjo: The twenty-second king of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, who ruled from 1776 to 1800. Jeongjo ordered Hwaseong built and promoted Suwon as part of his plans for royal reform.
Gyeonggi Province: A province in northwestern South Korea that surrounds Seoul and includes Suwon as its capital. Suwon’s provincial-capital role anchors the city within this densely populated region.
Samsung Digital City: Samsung Electronics’ large office and research campus in Suwon, South Korea. This campus is one of the clearest examples of Suwon’s modern technology economy.
Hwaseong City: A city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, that borders Suwon to the west and south. Its boundary with Suwon links a historic urban center to a rapidly growing neighboring city.
Hwaseong Haenggung: A royal temporary palace inside Hwaseong Fortress, used by Joseon kings during visits to Suwon. The palace shows how the fortress served royal visits as well as defense.
Seoul Capital Area: South Korea’s largest metropolitan region, centered on Seoul and including parts of Gyeonggi Province and Incheon. Suwon’s modern growth is closely tied to its position within this metropolitan region.
