Svatopluk I of Moravia

Svatopluk I ruled Great Moravia from about 870 to 894. During his reign, the polity reached its greatest territorial extent and regional influence.

Rastislav of Moravia: Rastislav ruled Great Moravia before Svatopluk and sought to reduce East Frankish influence. Svatopluk’s revolt against Rastislav brought him into conflict with the East Frankish king.
Arnulf of Carinthia: Arnulf of Carinthia was an East Frankish king and later emperor who ruled from 887 to 899. His alliance with Svatopluk against common rivals later gave way to renewed conflict.
Mojmir II: Mojmir II was a ruler of Great Moravia in the late ninth and early tenth centuries. He inherited the struggle to preserve the realm after Svatopluk’s death.

Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin: The Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin was the ninth-century settlement and expansion of Magyar groups in the region. Magyar incursions added pressure to the divided polity that followed Svatopluk.
Treaty of Forchheim (874): The Treaty of Forchheim was an agreement between Svatopluk and Louis the German in 874. It recognized a settlement that helped secure Svatopluk’s position in Moravia.
Louis the German: Louis the German was king of East Francia from 843 until 876. His campaigns and diplomacy shaped the Frankish struggle over Moravian rule.
Archdiocese of Moravia: The Archdiocese of Moravia was a ninth-century ecclesiastical province associated with Methodius. Its independence from Bavarian church authority strengthened Moravia’s political autonomy.
