Swabian War

The Swabian War was a 1499 conflict between the Old Swiss Confederacy and the Swabian League, backed by the Habsburgs. The Treaty of Basel ended hostilities and strengthened Swiss autonomy within the Holy Roman Empire.

Treaty of Basel (1499): The agreement that ended the Swabian War and settled its principal territorial and political disputes. It ended the fighting and left the Confederacy effectively free from imperial jurisdiction.
Reichsreform: A late fifteenth-century program to strengthen the institutions and administration of the Holy Roman Empire. Swiss resistance to its application became a direct source of friction with Emperor Maximilian I.
Battle of Hard: A 1499 battle near Lake Constance in which Swabian forces defeated Swiss troops. The defeat exposed the risks of Swiss operations near the lake early in the war.
