Swazi people

The Swazi people are a Southern African ethnic group centered in Eswatini, with communities in South Africa and elsewhere. Their language is siSwati, and their history is closely tied to the Eswatini monarchy.

Ngwane III: A leader traditionally regarded as the founder of the Swazi kingdom in the eighteenth century. His reign marks the early political formation associated with Swazi identity.
siSwati: A Nguni Bantu language spoken chiefly in Eswatini and South Africa. It is the principal language associated with Swazi identity.
Umhlanga (Reed Dance): An annual ceremony in Eswatini in which young women present reeds to the queen mother. It is a prominent public ceremony associated with Swazi cultural life.
Swaziland Protectorate: A British protectorate established over Swaziland in the late nineteenth century and lasting until independence in 1968. Protectorate rule altered the political setting in which Swazi communities lived.
Sobhuza I: A nineteenth-century king of the Swazi who consolidated the kingdom amid regional conflict. His rule helped establish the kingdom that later shaped Swazi national identity.
Nguni languages: A group of closely related Bantu languages including isiZulu, isiXhosa, siSwati, and isiNdebele. siSwati belongs to this wider linguistic family.
Incwala: A multi-day Swazi royal ritual associated with kingship, renewal, and the first fruits. It expresses the relationship between royal authority and communal renewal.
Eswatini independence: The end of British rule and establishment of an independent Swazi kingdom in 1968. Independence made the kingdom a sovereign state centered on Swazi institutions.
Mswati II: A nineteenth-century king whose reign expanded the Swazi kingdom and gave it its English name. The name Swazi derives from this influential monarch.
Swazi clans: Patrilineal kin groups that organize descent and social identity among Swazi people. Clan affiliation complements national and linguistic identity.
