Swedish–Novgorodian Wars

The Swedish–Novgorodian Wars were a series of medieval conflicts between Sweden and the Novgorod Republic over influence and territory around the eastern Baltic Sea.

Neva River: A river in northwestern Russia flowing from Lake Ladoga through Saint Petersburg into the Gulf of Finland. Its mouth and waterways formed a strategic corridor contested by Swedish and Novgorodian forces.
Novgorod Republic: A medieval polity centered on Novgorod, governed through institutions involving its prince, assembly, and elite merchants. It was the eastern Baltic power on one side of the wars.
Battle of the Neva: A 1240 battle in which Novgorodian forces defeated a Swedish expedition near the Neva River. It is the conflict's most famous military episode.
