Swedish Reformation

The sixteenth-century transformation of Sweden from Catholicism to a Lutheran state church, driven by royal authority and completed through successive religious and political changes.

Gustav I of Sweden: King of Sweden from 1523 to 1560, whose reign established royal control over the church. His consolidation of royal power made the break with Rome politically possible.
Reduction of Gustav I of Sweden: The Crown’s confiscation of church lands and revenues under Gustav I of Sweden. Seizing church wealth financed the monarchy and weakened Catholic institutions.
Laurentius Petri: Swedish Lutheran theologian who served as Sweden’s first Lutheran archbishop from 1531 to 1573. He organized the church’s Lutheran doctrine and helped stabilize reform beyond royal decrees.

Red Book (Sweden): The 1576 Swedish liturgical book associated with John III’s attempt to introduce a more Catholic-looking rite. Its introduction exposed resistance to religious compromise within the Lutheran church.
