Swedish Social Democratic Party

The Swedish Social Democratic Party is a political party founded in 1889. It became Sweden’s dominant governing party during much of the twentieth century and helped shape the country’s welfare state.

Swedish welfare state: A system of public services, social insurance, and income support developed in Sweden through democratic politics and collective bargaining. Social Democratic governments built and expanded many of the institutions associated with this model.
Swedish labor movement: The organizations and campaigns through which Swedish workers pursued improved conditions and political representation. The party grew within this movement and remained closely connected to its institutions.
Tage Erlander: A Swedish Social Democratic prime minister who governed from 1946 to 1969, the longest tenure in Swedish history. His governments oversaw the postwar expansion of public services and social insurance.
Moderate Party: A Swedish liberal-conservative political party and the largest traditional competitor to the Social Democrats. Its market-oriented program and electoral challenge provide the clearest long-running contrast with the party.
Saltsjöbaden Agreement: A 1938 agreement between Sweden’s employers’ confederation and trade-union confederation established rules for industrial relations. The party’s governing era helped foster the labor-market compromise the agreement formalized.
Swedish Social Democratic Youth League: The youth organization associated with Sweden’s Social Democratic movement, founded in 1917. Its formation followed a split in the earlier youth organization and shaped the party’s political generations.
Olof Palme: A Swedish Social Democratic politician who served as prime minister from 1969 to 1976 and from 1982 until his assassination in 1986. His leadership gave the party a distinctive international voice and a more assertive reform agenda.
Left Party (Sweden): A Swedish socialist party that developed from a 1917 split in the Social Democratic movement. It represents a more left-wing tradition that emerged from disputes within the broader labor movement.
Rehn–Meidner model: A Swedish economic policy framework combining wage solidarity, active labor-market policy, and restrictive macroeconomic policy. Social Democratic governments adopted policies influenced by this model to pursue full employment and structural change.
Landsorganisationen i Sverige: Sweden’s national trade-union confederation, founded in 1898 and closely linked historically to the Social Democratic Party. The party’s durable relationship with this union confederation connected electoral politics to organized labor.
