Sykes–Picot Agreement

A secret 1916 agreement in which Britain and France planned spheres of influence in Ottoman Arab territories. Its proposed divisions shaped later debates about imperial promises and Middle Eastern borders.

Mark Sykes: A British diplomat and politician who helped negotiate the 1916 agreement. He represented Britain in the negotiations and gave the agreement its familiar name.
Spheres of influence: Regions where a state exercises political or economic influence without necessarily annexing territory. The agreement assigned Britain and France proposed zones of influence rather than simply drawing national borders.
Balfour Declaration: A 1917 British statement supporting a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, subject to protections for existing communities. It added another British commitment concerning territory addressed in wartime plans.
Treaty of London (1915): A secret 1915 agreement in which Britain, France, and Russia promised Italy territorial gains for joining the Allies. It shows the Allies’ broader practice of privately bargaining over postwar territory.
François Georges-Picot: A French diplomat who negotiated with Britain over postwar control of Ottoman Arab territories. He represented France in the agreement’s negotiations.
Blue Zone: The area in the Sykes–Picot map assigned to direct French administration or control. It marked France’s proposed zone of direct authority.
San Remo Conference: A 1920 Allied conference that allocated League of Nations mandates over former Ottoman territories. Its mandate allocations differed from the agreement’s original wartime scheme.
Brest-Litovsk Treaty: The 1918 treaty by which Soviet Russia withdrew from World War I and ceded territory to the Central Powers. Its publication of secret treaties helped expose the Sykes–Picot agreement.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, involving the Allied and Central Powers. The agreement was part of Allied planning during the war against the Ottoman Empire.
Red Zone: The area in the Sykes–Picot map assigned to direct British administration or control. It marked Britain’s proposed zone of direct authority.
