Syllable

A unit of spoken language organized around a vowel or another sonorous sound, often with optional consonants before or after it. Syllables structure speech rhythm and pronunciation.

Syllable nucleus: The central, most sonorous part of a syllable, usually a vowel. It supplies the defining sound around which a syllable is organized.
Syllabification: The process or set of rules by which speech sounds are grouped into syllables. It describes how a continuous sound sequence receives syllable boundaries.
Mora (linguistics): A unit of phonological weight that can contribute to syllable structure and poetic meter. Some languages count morae where others organize rhythm around syllables.

Hyphenation: The division of written words into parts, often at line endings, according to orthographic rules. Syllable structure can inform word division, though spelling rules do not always follow speech.
Syllabic consonant: A consonant that functions as the nucleus of a syllable rather than accompanying a vowel. It demonstrates that a syllable need not contain a vowel.
