Sylvite

Sylvite is the naturally occurring mineral form of potassium chloride (KCl). It is typically colorless or white and commonly forms in evaporite deposits.

Potassium chloride: Potassium chloride is an ionic compound with the formula KCl, composed of potassium and chloride ions. Sylvite is the mineral form of this compound.
Brine: Brine is water containing a high concentration of dissolved salts. Sylvite can crystallize as an evaporating brine becomes concentrated.
Potassium fertilizer: Potassium fertilizer supplies plants with potassium, an essential nutrient involved in growth and water regulation. Most mined sylvite is processed into fertilizer products.
Saskatchewan potash deposits: Saskatchewan's potash deposits are extensive underground beds of potassium salts formed in an ancient marine basin. They contain some of the world's largest sylvite-rich ore reserves.
Halite: Halite is the mineral form of sodium chloride, commonly known as rock salt. Halite commonly occurs beside sylvite in evaporite deposits.
Fractional crystallization: Fractional crystallization is the sequential precipitation of minerals from a solution as its composition changes. Different salts precipitate at different stages as evaporite brines concentrate.
Potash mining: Potash mining extracts potassium-bearing salts from underground deposits or surface brines. Mining sylvite supplies much of the world's potash.
Zechstein: The Zechstein is a Late Permian succession of evaporite and sedimentary rocks beneath parts of northwestern Europe. Its evaporite beds include commercially important sylvite deposits.
Evaporite: An evaporite is a sedimentary deposit formed when mineral-rich water evaporates and dissolved substances precipitate. Sylvite belongs to deposits produced by water evaporation.
Marine evaporation sequence: A marine evaporation sequence is the ordered precipitation of minerals as seawater loses water through evaporation. Sylvite commonly forms late in the sequence, after less soluble salts.
