Symbolic interactionism

A sociological perspective that explains social life through meanings people create and negotiate in interaction using symbols, especially language.

Symbol: A sign, object, gesture, or sound that stands for something through shared meaning. Symbols let people communicate meanings that guide interaction.
George Herbert Mead: An American philosopher and social psychologist whose work connected mind, self, and society through interaction. Mead's lectures and writings supplied the perspective's central account of the social self.
Labeling theory: A theory that examines how social reactions and labels shape identities and patterns of behavior. It applies interactionist ideas to the consequences of being defined as deviant.
Structural functionalism: A sociological perspective that explains social institutions through their contributions to the stability of society. It foregrounds system-level functions where interactionism examines locally produced meanings.
Definition of the situation: An interpretation of circumstances that shapes how people respond to them. People act on situations as they understand them, not simply as objective conditions.
Herbert Blumer: An American sociologist who coined the term symbolic interactionism and formulated its guiding premises. Blumer named the tradition and clarified how meanings arise through interaction.
Stigma (sociology): A discrediting attribute that changes how a person is socially regarded in a particular context. Interactionist analysis traces how stigma is managed and negotiated in encounters.
Conflict theory: A sociological perspective that analyzes social life through unequal power, competition, and conflict. It emphasizes structural power relations often less central in interactionist explanations.
Role-taking: The process of imagining another person's perspective to guide one's own conduct. Taking others' perspectives helps people anticipate responses and coordinate behavior.
Pragmatism: A philosophical tradition that evaluates ideas through their practical consequences and emphasizes active inquiry. Pragmatism shaped interactionism's view of meaning as formed through action.
