Sympathy

Sympathy is concern for another person’s suffering or misfortune, often accompanied by understanding or sharing some of their feelings.

Empathy: Empathy is understanding or sharing another person’s emotional state. Unlike sympathy, empathy centers on understanding or sharing feelings, not necessarily concern.
Perspective-taking: Perspective-taking is the attempt to understand a situation from another person’s point of view. Considering another person’s situation can help sympathy arise without sharing their feelings.
Helping behavior: Helping behavior is an action intended to benefit another person. Sympathy can increase the likelihood of helping someone in need.
Condolence: A condolence is an expression of sympathy to someone grieving a loss. Condolences are a conventional expression of sympathy after bereavement.
Adam Smith: Adam Smith was an eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher and political economist. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Smith explained moral judgment through fellow-feeling with others.
Compassion: Compassion is concern for suffering coupled with a desire to relieve it. Compassion adds an impulse to help to sympathy’s concern.
Affective empathy: Affective empathy is an emotional response that resembles or reflects another person’s feelings. It describes the feeling-sharing often associated with sympathy.
Care ethics: Care ethics is a moral approach that emphasizes relationships, dependency, and responsiveness to need. It treats attentive concern for particular people as morally significant.
Sympathy card: A sympathy card is a written message expressing care to someone experiencing loss or hardship. The card gives sympathy a familiar, formal social expression.
David Hume: David Hume was an eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher and historian. Hume described sympathy as a process through which others’ feelings influence our own.
