Synchrotron radiation

Electromagnetic radiation emitted when relativistic charged particles are accelerated by magnetic fields. It is strongly beamed along the particles’ direction of motion and spans a broad range of frequencies.

Relativistic beaming: The concentration of radiation into a narrow forward cone when its source moves near light speed. Synchrotron radiation is beamed along the emitting particles’ instantaneous direction of motion.
Synchrotron light source: A particle accelerator designed to produce intense, tunable electromagnetic radiation for research. Storage-ring electrons emit synchrotron radiation that enables high-brightness experiments.
Ernest Lawrence: An American physicist who invented the cyclotron and advanced particle-accelerator research. The cyclotron’s development helped establish the accelerator setting in which synchrotron emission was recognized.
Radiation damping: The reduction of particle oscillations as an accelerator beam loses energy through radiation and is replenished by radio-frequency fields. Synchrotron emission damps electron-beam motion in storage rings.
Bremsstrahlung: Electromagnetic radiation produced when charged particles are deflected by electric fields, commonly near atomic nuclei. Both arise from acceleration, but synchrotron radiation is associated with magnetic bending of relativistic particles.
Liénard–Wiechert potentials: The electromagnetic potentials generated by a point charge moving along an arbitrary trajectory. They provide the classical framework for calculating radiation from accelerated charges.
X-ray crystallography: A method for determining atomic structures by analyzing X-ray diffraction from crystals. Bright synchrotron X-rays reveal structures from small or weakly diffracting crystals.
Cosmotron: A proton synchrotron built at Brookhaven National Laboratory and operated from 1952 to 1966. Its intense electron radiation made synchrotron emission conspicuous during accelerator operation.
Quantum excitation: Growth of particle-beam emittance caused by fluctuations in discrete photon emission. Random synchrotron photon emission counteracts radiation damping and sets beam equilibrium.
Curvature radiation: Radiation from a relativistic charged particle moving along a curved path, even without a uniform magnetic field. It describes emission in curved magnetic-field lines and is closely related to synchrotron radiation.
