Syngman Rhee

Syngman Rhee was a Korean independence activist and politician who became South Korea’s first president in 1948. His authoritarian rule ended with his resignation during the April Revolution of 1960.

Korean Empire: The Korean state ruled by the House of Yi from 1897 until Japan’s annexation in 1910. Rhee’s early activism unfolded as the empire lost sovereignty to Japan.
First Republic of Korea: South Korea’s first constitutional government, established in 1948 and ended by the April Revolution in 1960. Rhee led this republic throughout its existence as president.
