Synoptic meteorology

Synoptic meteorology studies weather systems by analyzing observations taken across broad regions at roughly the same time. It tracks large-scale patterns such as cyclones, fronts, and pressure systems.

Weather map: A map displaying meteorological observations or analyzed weather features over a region. It brings simultaneous station measurements together to reveal the spatial structure of a weather system.
Atmospheric pressure: The force per unit area exerted by the weight and motion of air. Pressure observations locate highs, lows, and gradients central to synoptic maps.
Extratropical cyclone: A storm system outside the tropics that derives energy largely from horizontal temperature contrasts. Its fronts, pressure falls, and life cycle are classic subjects of synoptic analysis.
Mesoscale meteorology: The study of atmospheric phenomena on scales smaller than synoptic systems and larger than local turbulence. Its storms and boundaries are more localized than the broad patterns emphasized here.
Surface weather analysis: A map-based analysis of near-ground pressure, fronts, and other weather features at a specified time. It is the standard synoptic representation of pressure systems and fronts at the surface.
Isobar: A line connecting points with equal atmospheric pressure on a map. Isobars make pressure gradients and circulation patterns visible in surface analysis.
Cyclogenesis: The formation or intensification of a cyclone. Synoptic fields help locate regions where atmospheric disturbances develop into stronger lows.
Micrometeorology: The study of atmospheric processes on small spatial and temporal scales, especially near Earth's surface. It focuses on local exchanges and turbulence rather than regional weather systems.
Upper-air chart: A meteorological chart showing atmospheric conditions at a specified altitude or pressure level. It reveals the circulation aloft that steers and strengthens surface systems.
Atmospheric front: A boundary separating air masses with contrasting temperature, humidity, or density. Fronts organize many midlatitude weather systems and are drawn on synoptic charts.
