Synthetic dye

A coloring substance made by chemical synthesis rather than extracted from natural sources. Synthetic dyes color materials by absorbing selected wavelengths of light.

Chromophore: The part of a molecule responsible for absorbing visible or ultraviolet light and producing color. Its structure gives a synthetic dye its characteristic absorption and hue.
William Henry Perkin: An English chemist who discovered mauveine while attempting to synthesize quinine in 1856. His accidental discovery launched the commercial synthetic dye industry.
Reactive dye: A dye that forms a covalent bond with a textile fiber during application. Reactive dyes illustrate how synthetic chemistry can produce durable color on cotton.
Synthetic textile: A textile made from manufactured fibers such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic. The growth of synthetic fibers created demand for dyes suited to hydrophobic materials.
Auxochrome: An atom or group that modifies a chromophore’s light absorption or improves a dye’s binding properties. Auxochromes tune color and help some dye molecules attach to fibers.
Mauveine: A mixture of purple aniline dyes discovered by William Henry Perkin in 1856. Its commercial production demonstrated that vivid dyes could be made from coal-tar chemicals.
Disperse dye: A sparingly water-soluble dye applied as a fine dispersion, especially to hydrophobic synthetic fibers. This dye class colors polyester, a fiber poorly suited to water-soluble colorants.
Textile industry: The industry that produces fibers, yarns, fabrics, and finished textile goods. Mass dye production transformed the scale and economics of textile manufacturing.
Dye–fiber interaction: The physical and chemical forces that hold dye molecules within or on textile fibers. These interactions determine how synthetic dyes color and remain on textiles.
Aniline dye: A synthetic dye made from aniline or related aromatic amines, many first developed in the nineteenth century. Early synthetic dyes such as mauveine belonged to this chemical family.
