Syr Darya

A major Central Asian river formed by the Naryn and Kara Darya rivers. It flows northwest through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan toward the Aral Sea, sustaining irrigated agriculture and communities along its course.

Naryn River: A major river rising in the Tian Shan of Kyrgyzstan and flowing west to join the Kara Darya. It supplies the larger share of the Syr Darya's headwaters.
Aral Sea: A formerly vast inland lake in Central Asia, now greatly diminished after river inflows were diverted for irrigation. The Syr Darya is one of the two rivers that fed it.
Kyrgyzstan: A landlocked country in Central Asia, including much of the Tian Shan headwaters. It controls important upstream reservoirs and tributaries feeding the river.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to land to support crop growth. Canals divert Syr Darya water to fields across the basin.
Khujand: A city in northern Tajikistan on the Syr Darya, historically known as Khujand. Its position on the river made it a long-standing crossing and regional center.
Kara Darya: A river rising in eastern Kyrgyzstan and flowing west through the Fergana Valley. Its confluence with the Naryn forms the Syr Darya.
Aral Sea disaster: The ecological and human crisis caused by the rapid shrinkage of the Aral Sea. Diversions from the Syr Darya contributed to the sea's collapse.
Uzbekistan: A landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by all the region's other states and Afghanistan. The Syr Darya crosses its territory and supports extensive irrigated farming.
Hydropower: Electricity generated by harnessing the energy of moving or falling water. Dams on the river and its tributaries provide electricity and regulate releases.
Kyzylorda: A city in southern Kazakhstan situated on the lower Syr Darya. Its history and agriculture are closely tied to the river's lower reaches.
