Syrian refugee crisis

The mass displacement of people fleeing the Syrian conflict, both within Syria and across its borders. It became one of the largest refugee crises of the twenty-first century.

Syrian civil war: An armed conflict in Syria that began in 2011 and involved government forces, opposition groups, and foreign powers. Fighting and insecurity drove successive waves of civilian flight.
Turkey: A country bordering Syria that hosted the largest population of Syrian refugees. Its shared border and large refugee population made it the main host country.
Refugee camp: A settlement where displaced people receive shelter and services, often under humanitarian or government administration. Camps offered shelter to some Syrians, while many others lived in towns and cities.

Internally displaced person: A person forced to leave home but who remains within their country's internationally recognized borders. Millions fled their homes without crossing Syria's borders.
Lebanon: A small country bordering Syria that hosted a very large refugee population relative to its own population. The arrival of Syrians placed exceptional pressure on its services and infrastructure.
Non-refoulement: A principle of international law forbidding the return of a person to a place where they face serious threats. It constrains states' ability to send asylum seekers back to danger.
Global Compact on Refugees: A 2018 United Nations framework for more predictable and equitable international responsibility-sharing for refugees. It addresses how countries can share the costs of large refugee situations.
Refugee: A person outside their country who cannot safely return and meets the definition in refugee law. Cross-border displacement is understood through this legal and humanitarian status.
Jordan: A country bordering Syria that hosted hundreds of thousands of registered Syrian refugees. Its camps and towns became major sites of refuge.
