Syrian Wars

The Syrian Wars were six conflicts between the Ptolemaic and Seleucid kingdoms, fought from 274 to 168 BCE over control of Coele-Syria.

Coele-Syria: A region of the eastern Mediterranean contested by the Ptolemaic and Seleucid kingdoms. Its control was the central territorial prize of the wars.
Wars of the Diadochi: A series of wars among Alexander the Great's successors over his empire. Their settlement created the rival kingdoms that later fought over Syria.

Seleucus IV Philopator: A Seleucid king who ruled from 187 to 175 BCE after Antiochus III. His reign followed Seleucid expansion but faced severe financial strain.
Battle of Panium: A battle around 200 BCE in which Antiochus III defeated Ptolemy V's forces. Its outcome transferred Coele-Syria to Seleucid control.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic empire founded by Seleucus I, stretching across much of western Asia. Its rulers regarded Coele-Syria as part of their inherited domain.
