T. H. Green

Thomas Hill Green (1836–1882) was an English idealist philosopher and political theorist whose account of freedom linked personal development to social institutions and the common good.

British idealism: A nineteenth-century philosophical movement that developed German idealist ideas in Britain. Green became one of its leading Oxford figures.
Prolegomena to Ethics: Green’s posthumously published philosophical work on moral knowledge, will, and the human good. It gives his fullest systematic account of ethical self-realization.
John Stuart Mill: An English philosopher and political economist who defended individual liberty and utilitarian ethics. Green challenged Mill’s account of liberty while retaining a commitment to individual development.

On the Different Senses of Freedom: Green’s 1881 inaugural lecture distinguishing freedom as absence of restraint from freedom as capacity for worthwhile action. This lecture states his central distinction between negative and positive freedom.
