Knowra Taboo Taboo A prohibition against particular acts, objects, or relationships, often enforced through social or religious norms. Taboos mark conduct as forbidden or dangerous, sometimes without a formal legal penalty.
Social norm : A shared expectation about how members of a group should behave. Taboos are especially restrictive norms, often upheld by collective approval or disapproval.
Tongan language : The Polynesian language spoken in Tonga, from which the English word “taboo” entered through European contact. The English term derives from Tongan tapu, meaning forbidden or set apart.
Ritual : A patterned, symbolic sequence of actions performed according to shared conventions. Ritual rules often specify which acts are forbidden in particular settings.
Incest taboo : A prohibition on sexual relations or marriage between people defined as close relatives. It is a widespread taboo whose boundaries and explanations vary across societies.

James Cook : The British naval officer and explorer whose Pacific voyages brought the word “taboo” into English accounts. Cook recorded the term during his eighteenth-century voyages in the Pacific.
Totemism : A system of social and symbolic relations linking groups to animals, plants, or other emblematic beings. Totemic systems can impose prohibitions on killing, eating, or otherwise treating a group’s emblem.
Food taboo : A social or religious prohibition against eating particular foods. Food restrictions make taboo visible in everyday choices and group identity.
Stigma : A social mark that discredits a person or group and invites unequal treatment. People associated with taboo acts or conditions may face lasting exclusion.
