Tactile paving

Tactile paving is a textured ground surface that communicates warnings or directional information to pedestrians through touch underfoot or cane contact.

Detectable warning surface: A raised-pattern surface that warns pedestrians of hazards or transitions, especially at street crossings. Its raised domes are the standard tactile warning pattern at many roadway edges.
Pedestrian crossing: A designated place for pedestrians to cross a road. Warning paving commonly marks the boundary between a sidewalk and vehicle space.
Seiichi Miyake: A Japanese inventor credited with developing tactile paving in the 1960s. Miyake developed the paving system to help people with visual impairments detect hazards.
Audible pedestrian signal: A sound-based signal that conveys pedestrian crossing information at a traffic light. It communicates crossing status through hearing rather than contact with the ground.
Truncated domes: Short, flat-topped raised domes arranged in a regular pattern on walking surfaces. Their detectable shape distinguishes warnings from directional tactile patterns.
Railway platform edge: The boundary of a passenger platform beside railway tracks. A warning surface marks the drop and train hazard along the platform.
Okayama City: A Japanese city in which tactile paving was first installed in 1967. Its installation at a street crossing became the first known use of tactile paving.
Accessible pedestrian signal: A traffic signal system that provides crossing information through nonvisual cues. It is a broader crossing aid that can combine audible and tactile information.
Directional tactile paving: A tactile surface with elongated bars that indicate a direction of travel. Its bars guide movement where other cues, such as a building edge, are absent.
Wayfinding: The process of determining and following a route through an environment. Directional paving can provide route cues through open or complex public spaces.
