Taejo of Goryeo

Taejo of Goryeo founded the Goryeo dynasty and ruled from 918 to 943. Through conquest, alliances, and diplomacy, he unified much of the Korean Peninsula after the Later Three Kingdoms period.

Later Three Kingdoms: The Korean political division among Goryeo, Later Baekje, and Silla from the late ninth century until 936. Taejo’s rise unfolded within this three-way struggle for control of the peninsula.
Battle of Gongsan: A 927 battle in which Later Baekje forces defeated Goryeo near present-day Daegu. The defeat exposed Goryeo’s vulnerability and shaped Taejo’s subsequent military strategy.
