Taejo of Joseon

Taejo of Joseon was the founder and first king of the Joseon dynasty, ruling Korea from 1392 to 1398 after overthrowing Goryeo.

Goryeo: A Korean dynasty that ruled from 918 until its overthrow in 1392. Taejo’s coup ended Goryeo and transferred sovereignty to a new dynasty.
Founding of the Joseon dynasty: The establishment of Joseon rule in Korea in 1392 after the overthrow of Goryeo. Taejo’s accession was the political act that inaugurated the new dynasty.
Jeongjong of Joseon: The second king of Joseon, ruling from 1398 to 1400 after Taejo abdicated. His brief reign followed the first violent succession crisis of Taejo’s house.

Wihwado Retreat: A 1388 withdrawal by Goryeo forces under Yi Seong-gye, which enabled him to seize political power. The retreat marked the decisive break between Yi and the Goryeo court.
Jeong Do-jeon: A Confucian scholar and statesman who helped design Joseon’s founding institutions and political ideology. He supplied the institutional blueprint for the monarchy Taejo established.
