Tagus

The Tagus is the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula, flowing from eastern Spain across Portugal to the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon.

Tagus River Basin: The drainage area whose streams and rivers flow into the Tagus. The basin gathers water across central Iberia into the main river.
Alcántara Reservoir: A large reservoir on the Tagus created by the Alcántara Dam in Spain. It stores river water and supports hydroelectric generation.
Iberian Peninsula: The southwestern European peninsula occupied mainly by Spain and Portugal. The Tagus is the peninsula’s longest river.
Lisbon Earthquake of 1755: A devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Lisbon and surrounding areas on 1 November 1755. The tsunami traveled into the Tagus estuary and devastated the waterfront.
Almonte River: A Spanish tributary of the Tagus that joins it in Extremadura. Its confluence is submerged beneath the Alcántara reservoir.
Belver Dam: A Portuguese hydroelectric dam on the Tagus near Belver. It is one of several dams harnessing the river in Portugal.
Central System: A mountain range in central Spain that includes the Tagus’s source region. The river rises in these mountains before flowing west.
Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve: A protected wetland area in the Tagus estuary, important for migratory birds. Its marshes preserve habitats within a heavily used river mouth.
Zêzere River: A major Portuguese tributary of the Tagus rising in the Serra da Estrela. It supplies substantial flow to the Tagus within Portugal.
Tagus–Segura Water Transfer: A Spanish water-transfer system that moves water from the Tagus basin toward the Segura basin. It makes the river a source for water supply beyond its natural basin.
