Taharqa

Taharqa was a king of Kush and pharaoh of Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty, ruling from about 690 to 664 BCE. His reign brought major temple building and conflict with the Assyrian Empire.

Piye: A Kushite king who conquered Egypt and founded the dynasty later known as Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty. His conquest established the Kushite rule that Taharqa inherited.
Assyrian conquest of Egypt: The seventh-century BCE campaigns by Assyria that ended Kushite control of Egypt. These invasions forced Taharqa to retreat from Egypt and ultimately end his rule there.
Kingdom of Kush: An ancient African kingdom centered in Nubia, south of Egypt, with major centers at Napata and Meroë. Kush was Taharqa’s homeland and the base of his rule.

Shabaka: A Kushite king and pharaoh of Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty who ruled before Taharqa. He was Taharqa’s predecessor and an earlier builder of Kushite authority in Egypt.
Battle of Eltekeh: A battle in the Levant in which Assyrian forces fought an Egyptian-led coalition around 701 BCE. The conflict illustrates the earlier military contest involving Taharqa’s Egyptian forces and Assyria.
Napata: An ancient Nubian city near Jebel Barkal that served as a major religious and political center of Kush. Its sacred landscape anchored the Kushite kingship Taharqa represented.
Twenty-sixth Dynasty of Egypt: An Egyptian dynasty founded by Psamtik I after Assyrian intervention ended Kushite rule. Its rise followed the removal of Taharqa’s dynasty from Egypt.
Taharqa’s pyramid at Nuri: The pyramid of Taharqa at Nuri, a royal cemetery in ancient Kush. His burial monument reflects the Kushite royal tradition after his reign in Egypt.
