Taiga drama

An annual NHK historical television drama series, usually following a major figure or period in Japanese history across a full year.

NHK: Japan’s public broadcasting organization, operating television and radio services nationwide. NHK commissions and broadcasts the annual series.
NHK General TV: NHK’s main general-interest television service in Japan. The series has traditionally occupied a prominent Sunday evening slot on this channel.
Hana no Shōgai: The first NHK taiga drama, broadcast in 1963 and centered on Ii Naosuke. Its broadcast established the annual historical-drama format.
