Taiga

The taiga is a vast subarctic biome dominated by coniferous forests, extending across northern Eurasia and North America. Long, cold winters and short growing seasons shape its vegetation and wildlife.

Subarctic climate: A climate of long, cold winters and short, cool summers, found south of the Arctic. Its brief growing season and severe winters set the taiga’s basic ecological limits.
Growing season: The part of the year when environmental conditions allow plant growth. Taiga plants must complete much of their growth during a short, frost-free interval.
Boreal forestry: The management and harvesting of forests in the boreal region. Timber production is a major human use of taiga landscapes.
Arctic amplification: The faster rate of warming in the Arctic compared with the global average. Warming reaches the northern taiga and intensifies pressures on frozen ground and forests.
Siberian taiga: The extensive boreal forest region spanning much of Siberia in northern Asia. Its immense forests include larch-dominated areas and extensive permafrost.
Boreal forest: A forest biome of high northern latitudes, dominated by cold-tolerant coniferous trees. This is the forest ecosystem commonly meant by taiga.
Photoperiodism: An organism’s response to changes in the duration of light and darkness. Seasonal day length helps taiga plants time growth and dormancy.
Clearcutting: A logging method that removes nearly all trees from a selected area at once. It is widely used in commercial boreal forestry and alters habitat and regeneration.
Boreal forest migration: The shifting distribution of boreal tree species in response to environmental change. Warming can move suitable forest conditions northward, though migration is uneven and slow.
Canadian boreal forest: The broad belt of boreal forest extending across Canada. It contains a large share of the world’s remaining intact boreal landscapes.
