Taipei

Taipei is Taiwan’s capital and largest city, in the island’s north. It is the center of a metropolitan region that extends into neighboring New Taipei City.

Taiwan: Taiwan is an island in East Asia governed as a self-ruled democracy, with its own government and institutions. Taipei is Taiwan’s capital and principal political center.
Ketagalan people: The Ketagalan are an Indigenous people of northern Taiwan, whose traditional territory includes the Taipei Basin. Their communities inhabited the basin before Han Chinese settlement expanded.

Republic of China: The Republic of China is a state whose government has administered Taiwan and several smaller islands since 1949. Taipei serves as the government’s seat and the state’s principal political center.
Taipei Basin: The Taipei Basin is a lowland basin in northern Taiwan, surrounded by mountains and drained by the Tamsui River system. The basin’s mountains and rivers shape Taipei’s urban footprint and flood risks.
Taiwan under Qing rule: Taiwan under Qing rule describes the island’s administration by the Qing dynasty from 1683 to 1895. Qing authorities made Taipei the island’s administrative capital in the late nineteenth century.
Taipei Main Station: Taipei Main Station is a major railway and transit interchange in central Taipei. It joins conventional rail, high-speed rail, metro, and intercity bus networks.
Lee Teng-hui: Lee Teng-hui was Taiwan’s president from 1988 to 2000 and the first Taiwan-born person to hold the office. His presidency coincided with Taipei’s emergence from authoritarian rule into democratic politics.
Taiwanese democratization: Taiwanese democratization is the transition from authoritarian rule to competitive elections and civil liberties, especially from the 1980s onward. Taipei’s elections and civic movements became visible stages in the island-wide transition.
