Taira clan

The Taira were a Japanese warrior clan that rose to political power in the late Heian period. Their dominance ended after defeat by the Minamoto in the Genpei War.

Emperor Kanmu: The Japanese emperor who reigned from 781 to 806 and founded the Kanmu branch of the imperial family. The Taira claimed descent from Kanmu’s line, a basis for their clan identity.
Fujiwara clan: A Japanese aristocratic family that dominated Heian court politics through regencies and marriage alliances. The Taira adapted the Fujiwara strategy of marrying daughters into the imperial family.

Minamoto clan: A Japanese warrior clan whose victory over the Taira in the Genpei War enabled its leader to found a shogunate. The Minamoto were the Taira’s principal rivals and defeated them in 1185.
Taira no Tadamori: A Taira warrior and courtier who served Emperor Go-Shirakawa and strengthened his family’s influence. His naval campaigns and court service advanced the family before his son’s ascent.
Taira no Shigeko: A Taira woman who became consort to Emperor Go-Shirakawa and mother of Emperor Takakura. Her marriage connected the clan directly to the imperial succession.
