Tala

Tala is a repeating rhythmic cycle that organizes musical time in South Asian classical music. It is marked by patterns of beats and divisions, often articulated through claps, gestures, and percussion.

Matra: A matra is a beat or unit of duration within a tala. Matras are the counted units that make up a tala’s cycle.
Teentaal: Teentaal is a Hindustani tala of 16 beats arranged in four equal sections. Its four-part cycle is a widely used example of Hindustani tala structure.
Tala (Hindustani music): Tala in Hindustani music is a system of recurring rhythmic cycles, commonly marked with claps, waves, and tabla strokes. This tradition makes section accents and the return to sam especially audible.
Musical meter: Musical meter is the recurring organization of beats into groups of strong and weak accents. Meter describes accent grouping broadly; tala also names a cyclical system with tradition-specific practices.
Bharata Muni: Bharata Muni is the traditionally named author of the Sanskrit treatise Natya Shastra. The treatise contains early discussions of Indian rhythmic and performance theory.
Vibhag: A vibhag is a section into which a Hindustani tala cycle is divided. Vibhags group a cycle’s beats into recognizable sections.
Ektal: Ektal is a Hindustani tala of 12 beats, commonly divided into six sections. Its six-part organization illustrates a cycle unlike the more familiar 16-beat pattern.
Laya: Laya is the tempo or rate of musical movement in South Asian music. A tala’s cycle can persist while its performance shifts in speed.
Rhythm: Rhythm is the organization of sounds and silences in time. Tala is one culturally specific way of organizing musical rhythm.
Purandara Dasa: Purandara Dasa was a 16th-century composer and teacher associated with the foundations of Carnatic music pedagogy. His teaching tradition helped establish graded exercises that train rhythmic understanding.
