Tanganyika African National Union

Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) was a political party founded in 1954 to campaign for Tanganyika’s self-government and independence. Under Julius Nyerere, it led the country to independence in 1961.

Tanganyika African Association: A Tanganyikan civic organization founded in 1929 that advocated African interests under British colonial rule. TANU grew out of this association, which Julius Nyerere reorganized into a mass nationalist party.
Nonviolent resistance: Political action that opposes authority without using physical violence. Nyerere presented TANU’s campaign as disciplined, nonviolent pressure for self-rule.
Oscar Kambona: A Tanganyikan nationalist who served as TANU’s secretary-general and later held senior government posts. He helped organize the party and represented its cause in international forums.
Independence of Tanganyika: The end of British rule and establishment of an independent Tanganyika on 9 December 1961. It was the central political outcome of TANU’s campaign.
