Tariq ibn Ziyad

Tariq ibn Ziyad was an Umayyad commander who led the 711 invasion of Iberia. The name Gibraltar derives from the Arabic Jabal Tariq, meaning “Mountain of Tariq.”

Umayyad conquest of Hispania: The Muslim conquest of much of the Iberian Peninsula, launched in 711 under Umayyad authority. Tariq’s landing at Gibraltar initiated this campaign.
Musa ibn Nusayr: An Umayyad governor of Ifriqiya who directed the expansion into the Maghreb and Iberia. He authorized Tariq’s expedition and later crossed into Iberia with additional forces.
