Tathātā

Tathātā, or suchness, is reality as it is, free from conceptual distinctions and distortion. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, it names the nature of phenomena beyond ordinary conceptual fixation.

Śūnyatā: The absence of inherent, independent existence in persons and phenomena. Suchness describes reality whose lack of fixed essence is disclosed through emptiness.
Dependent origination: The principle that phenomena arise through conditions and relations rather than independently. It explains why phenomena lack isolated essences and can be seen as such.
Prajñāpāramitā: A body of Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures centered on perfection of wisdom and emptiness. These texts frame ultimate reality as beyond grasping and conceptual construction.
Svabhāva: The idea that something possesses an intrinsic nature existing independently of causes and relations. Tathātā does not imply the fixed, self-existing essence that emptiness critiques.
Nonduality: The view that apparent oppositions do not describe ultimately separate realities. Suchness is not divided into subject and object or other conceptual pairs.
Madhyamaka: A Mahāyāna Buddhist philosophical tradition associated with Nāgārjuna and the analysis of emptiness. Madhyamaka uses reasoning about emptiness to articulate the nature named by tathātā.
Nāgārjuna: An Indian Buddhist philosopher traditionally regarded as the founder of Madhyamaka. His analysis of emptiness shaped later accounts of reality beyond conceptual extremes.
Nihilism: The denial that anything exists or has value, meaning, or truth. Emptiness and suchness deny inherent existence, not the conventional reality of phenomena.
Two truths doctrine: A Buddhist framework distinguishing conventional truth from ultimate truth. Suchness concerns ultimate truth, while everyday distinctions remain conventionally useful.
Prajñā: Wisdom that directly understands the nature of reality in Buddhist traditions. Prajñā is the insight through which suchness is realized rather than merely defined.
