Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV

Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV was King of Tonga from 1965 until his death in 2006, succeeding his mother, Queen Sālote Tupou III. His reign spanned Tonga’s transition from a British-protected state to full sovereignty.

Tonga: An island kingdom in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, comprising more than 170 islands. Tupou IV ruled this kingdom for four decades.
Sālote Tupou III: Queen of Tonga from 1918 to 1965, remembered for strengthening the monarchy and representing Tonga internationally. She was Tupou IV’s mother and immediate predecessor.
George Tupou V: King of Tonga from 2006 to 2012 and the eldest son of Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV. He succeeded his father and carried out major political reforms.
Tonga's independence: Tonga’s attainment of full sovereignty on 4 June 1970 after ending its British protected-state relationship. Tupou IV was king when Tonga became fully sovereign.

Tongan coronation of 1967: The ceremony in which Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV was crowned king in Nukuʻalofa in 1967. It formally celebrated his kingship after his accession in 1965.
Tongan pro-democracy movement: A political movement seeking greater democratic representation and accountability in Tonga. Its growing influence challenged the political order maintained during much of Tupou IV’s rule.
University of Sydney: An Australian public research university founded in 1850. Tupou IV studied law there before returning to Tonga.
