Knowra Taurine Taurine Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino sulfonic acid abundant in animal tissues. It contributes to bile acid conjugation and several processes in nervous-system, muscle, and cardiovascular function.
Bile acid conjugation : The attachment of amino acids to bile acids, increasing their solubility and aiding their secretion. Taurine conjugates bile acids in the liver, helping form bile salts such as taurocholate.
Amino sulfonic acid : An organic compound containing an amino group and a sulfonic acid group. This chemical family describes taurine more accurately than the protein-building amino acids.
Energy drink : A beverage marketed to increase alertness, commonly containing caffeine and other added ingredients. Taurine is a common ingredient, although its independent contribution to perceived energy is unclear.
Glycine : The simplest protein-building amino acid, also involved in inhibitory neurotransmission and metabolism. Both can influence inhibitory signaling, but glycine is a protein amino acid and taurine is not.
Taurine and longevity : Research examining whether taurine availability or supplementation influences lifespan and healthy aging. Animal findings have prompted interest, but benefits for human longevity are not established.
Taurine transporter : A membrane protein that transports taurine into cells and helps regulate tissue taurine levels. This transporter maintains taurine concentrations in tissues where the molecule is abundant.
Sulfonic acid : An organic functional group consisting of sulfur bonded to three oxygen atoms and an organic group. Taurine’s sulfonic acid group gives it properties distinct from amino acids with carboxyl groups.
Dietary supplement : A product intended to supplement the diet with nutrients or other substances. Taurine is sold in capsules and powders as well as included in mixed supplements.
Beta-alanine : A non-protein amino acid that combines with histidine to form the muscle dipeptide carnosine. It is another supplement ingredient sometimes confused with taurine despite different chemistry and effects.
Taurine and cardiovascular health : Research on taurine’s possible effects on blood pressure, heart function, and cardiovascular risk. Taurine’s effects on cardiac cells motivate clinical studies, but outcomes do not yet define treatment.
