Taytu Betul

Taytu Betul (c. 1851–1918) was Empress of Ethiopia as the wife of Menelik II. She helped establish Addis Ababa and exercised political influence during his reign.

Menelik II: Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to 1913, Menelik II expanded the empire and defeated Italy at Adwa. As her husband and emperor, he shared power with Taytu during Ethiopia’s expansion and the founding of Addis Ababa.
Founding of Addis Ababa: The establishment of Ethiopia’s present-day capital in the late nineteenth century around Menelik II’s court. Taytu selected the site and helped establish the settlement that became the capital.
