Te Rauparaha

Te Rauparaha was a nineteenth-century Ngāti Toa leader who led his people’s migration and expansion across the lower North Island. He is also associated with composing the haka “Ka Mate.”

Ngāti Toa: Ngāti Toa is a Māori iwi whose traditional rohe spans parts of the lower North Island and upper South Island. Te Rauparaha led this iwi during its migration and expansion.
Musket Wars: The Musket Wars were a series of intertribal conflicts in New Zealand from the early nineteenth century into the 1830s. Firearms altered the balance of power during the period of Te Rauparaha’s expansion.
Ka Mate: “Ka Mate” is a Māori haka traditionally attributed to Te Rauparaha. The haka is the cultural work most widely associated with him.
Rugby union in New Zealand: Rugby union in New Zealand is a major team sport with deep national and community significance. Performances of “Ka Mate” before matches made Te Rauparaha’s attributed haka internationally familiar.
Te Rangihaeata: Te Rangihaeata was a Ngāti Toa leader and Te Rauparaha’s nephew. He was a close ally in campaigns and later conflicts involving Te Rauparaha.
Migration of Ngāti Toa: The migration of Ngāti Toa was a series of movements from Kawhia toward the lower North Island in the 1820s. These movements carried Te Rauparaha’s people into new territories.
Wairau Affray: The Wairau Affray was an 1843 confrontation over land near the Wairau Valley, resulting in deaths on both sides. Te Rauparaha’s involvement made the confrontation a defining episode in his colonial-era history.
Haka: Haka are Māori posture dances that combine movement, vocalization, and rhythm for varied purposes. “Ka Mate” belongs to a broader tradition of haka with distinct forms and contexts.
Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi: Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi was a Ngāti Toa leader and son of Te Rauparaha. His succession connected Te Rauparaha’s leadership to the next generation.
Battle of Waiorua: The Battle of Waiorua was an 1824 conflict on Kapiti Island in which Ngāti Toa defeated a large opposing force. The victory strengthened Ngāti Toa’s position on Kapiti Island.
